Why Your Business Isn't Showing Up on Google

A step-by-step way to diagnose why your business or website does not appear in Google, from simple indexing problems to stiff competition.

"We are not on Google" can mean several different things, and each has a different fix. Start by working out which one applies to you.

First, search three different ways

  1. Your exact business name. If you do not appear for this, something basic is wrong.
  2. site:yourdomain.com This shows which of your pages Google has indexed.
  3. Your service and town, such as "roof repair Huntington". This tests whether you rank for what customers actually type.

Use a private browser window so your own history does not skew the results.

If your name does not appear at all

The site is new. Google can take days or weeks to discover a new site. Verify it in Search Console and submit your sitemap to speed things up.

The site is telling Google to stay away. Developers often block search engines while a site is being built and forget to remove the block. Look for a noindex tag in the page code or a Disallow: / line in the robots.txt file. Search Console's URL Inspection tool will tell you if a page is blocked.

You have no Business Profile. For local name searches, the panel on the right comes from your Google Business Profile. If you have never claimed one, do that today.

If site: shows few or no pages

Google has not indexed your content. Common causes:

  • The pages are blocked, as above.
  • The site has very little text. Pages made mostly of images give Google nothing to read.
  • The site is built so that content only appears after scripts run, and something is failing.
  • The pages are near-duplicates of each other.

Search Console's Pages report lists which URLs are excluded and why.

If you appear for your name but not for your services

This is the most common situation, and it is a ranking problem rather than a technical one.

Your pages do not match the search. If you want to rank for "bathroom remodeling", you need a page that is clearly about bathroom remodeling, with that phrase in the title and heading and real content beneath it. A bullet point on a general services page is not enough.

Competitors are simply stronger. They may have more reviews, older sites, more links and more detailed pages. Look at who ranks in the top three and compare honestly.

You are too far away. For map results, distance matters. If the searcher is fifteen miles from your address, nearer businesses will usually win.

Your site is slow or hard to use on a phone. This is rarely the main cause, but it can tip a close contest.

If you used to appear and now do not

  • Did the website change recently? Redesigns that delete or rename pages without redirects are the leading cause of sudden drops. See the redesign checklist.
  • Did the domain or hosting lapse? Even a short outage can cause problems.
  • Is there a manual action? Search Console shows a notice under Security and Manual Actions if Google has penalized the site.
  • Was your Business Profile suspended? Check the profile dashboard.

When to get help

If Search Console shows errors you do not understand, or the site was built in a way that hides content from Google, that is a technical fix and usually a quick one for someone who knows where to look. If the issue is competition, there is no shortcut. It is steady work on content, reviews and reputation.
